In the metropolises of the republic, the diagnosis about the East was quite unanimous for a long time: they had never really learnt democracy there and the so-called civil society could not be achieved here either. The ‘Wende’ - failed. The wall - best to put it up again. Paradoxically, it is precisely this supposedly non-existent civil society that is being asked to finally solve the problems in the East, which is too often left to do this work alone. Together with the author Hendrik Bolz, the Berliner Ensemble wants to make East Germany's civil society visible: Who are the people who, contrary to all the generalisations about ‘the East’, fight every day for an open and democratic society? What experiences have they had in the last 35 years after reunification? Starting in January, Hendrik Bolz and the Berliner Ensemble will take turns visiting civil society organisations in the East or inviting them to Berlin-Mitte's WERKRAUM to listen, argue and give space to the future of East Germany.
